Marc Emery is a 57-year old Canadian activist (married to fellow activist Jodie Emery) who, since 1990, who has been arrested 28 times and imprisoned 23 times for marijuana-related offences. He was released from US federal prison in August 2014 after serving 4 1\/2 years for cannabis seeds sold to Americans. In Canada, Mr. Emery was instrumental in striking down the Canadian government ban on marijuana printed material that existed from 1987 to 1995, using civil disobedience and court challenge from 1990 to 1995. He was instrumental in financing the court cases that legalized medical marijuana in Canada. $5 million in profits from seed sales went to Canadian, US, European, Israeli, New Zealand activists groups from 1995 to 2005. The US DEA had him arrested on Canadian soil for extradition to the USA on July 29, 2005. In the DEA press release, the US government cited all the money Emery gave to legalization groups as its main concern.<\/p>\n
In his presentation, Emery will recount his exploits in challenging the laws with civil disobedience, and give his opinion on where the next great challenges for our movement will be. Currently Emery is pushing his agenda with an aggressive call across Canada to elect the Liberal party of Canada in the national election coming in Canada October 19. The Liberal Party, usually the governing party in Canada, has adopted a complete legalization platform.
